About the Opportunity
The primary purpose of the Laboratory Scientist is to provide an efficient and timely forensic DNA analytical service in casework, which includes handling samples in matters of significant complexity, sensitivity or public prominence. The position contributes to the delivery of a high-quality forensic examination service to the justice system of South Australia.
About the Business
Forensic Science SA (FSSA) provides a comprehensive, coordinated range of services to agencies associated with the justice system including the State Coroner, South Australia Police (SAPOL), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and defence and civil litigants.
We are part of the Attorney General’s Department and the Director, FSSA reports to the Executive Director, Legal & Legislative Services.
Within FSSA there are four scientific/medico-legal operational areas: Pathology, Chemistry, Biology and Toxicology, each analysing materials using a diverse range of scientific equipment and processes.
The operational areas are supported by Administration, Information Technology and Projects, Science Support and Quality, who each provide underpinning services in support of the operational areas.

Special Conditions for Employment
Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.
- Some interstate and intrastate travel may be required.
- A degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Theoretical knowledge of molecular biology including an understanding of the application of DNA testing in a forensic environment.
- Experience working in a biology or diagnostic laboratory, or experience with laboratory analyses as part of undergraduate coursework and/or student research placements/projects.
