We’re now looking for applicants interested in being trained as captioners in our Live Broadcast Captioning Academy. The Academy is an initial 6-week training programdesigned for entry-level candidates that covers the fundamentals of how to live caption. Successful candidates will go on to create high-quality live captions for broadcast television programming using the latest in voice captioning technology.

The training program will be a hybrid delivery model: 3-weeks remote delivery training via zoom, followed by 3-weeks in person training at our Melbourne office. Candidates who successfully complete training will then be required to complete 3-weeks mentored “on the job” training.

To be considered, you must be able to commit to the following training timeline:

Week 6: Mon to Fri (19/09-23/09), 1pm to 7pm daily, in person training in Melbourne office

Upon completion of training, you must be available for 3 shifts per week (over a 3-week period) for mentored on the job training:

Weeks 7, 8 and 9: Mon to Fri (26/09-14/10), 2.30pm to 7pm, 3 shifts per week, remote training (work from home)

Upon successful completion of the training program, you will have the option to work from home on an ongoing basis. You will be paid for all training hours at the training rate, and after successful sign-off, will be offered a casual role and transition to the standard live captioning rate.

This is an excellent opportunity for anyone passionate about accessibility and wanting to have an impact on the lives of millions of people.

In the Academy, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn how live captions are created, including how to respeak (voice captioning technique), use captioning technology, and produce captions in line with our in-house style guides
  • Provide live captions for broadcast television programming, such as live news and sport content
  • Work in a fast-paced, exciting, on-air environment, both independently and as part of a team

The ideal candidate for this role will possess:

  • Advanced computer skills: MUST be an experienced Windows OS user
  • Ability to multitask, work under pressure and follow instructions
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal

The selection process for this role includes completing an online spelling/punctuation/grammar test, and a respeaking aptitude test, after which short-listed applicants will be invited to an interview and be required to complete an in person (15-minute) technical test.

Successful candidates will be required to complete the 6-week training program commencing on Monday, 15 August 2022. You must be available for the full duration of the program to be considered for the position. After successful completion of the training program, you will complete a further 3 weeks of mentorship prior to your casual employment being confirmed. There will be additional training workshops provided once you have progressed to this point for continued upskilling opportunities.
